Why the name?
In his treatise Rhetoric, Aristotle identifies three modes of persuasion: logos (logic), ethos (ethics), and pathos (emotions). We believe the most important of these is the latter, which Aristotle defined as the “awakening of emotion in the audience so as to induce them to make the judgment desired.” While the concept of pathos is most easily recognized in political or persuasive speech, it is also prevalent in art and literature, academic writing and research, and marketing. Studies consistently show that emotions influence people’s information processing and decision-making in much more subtle and powerful ways than logical appeals. In this digital age, it is not enough to have a visually appealing marketing campaign; it is crucial to connect with audiences on an emotional level and help them feel involved and connected to your brand.
It is not enough to know one or even two of these points; unless we understand all three, we shall be unable to arouse emotion in anyone.
